Withdrawal Treatment

Management of withdrawal symptoms, or Detox, is often the first step to recovery.

Detox and Withdrawal

  • The goals of medically supervised withdrawal are to alleviate the withdrawal symptoms, prevent worsening symptoms, and to prepare the individual for transition to the maintenance phase of treatment (Recovery).

  • Alcohol withdrawal develops when a person abruptly stops or substantially decreases the amount of alcohol they consume. Patients who have not had delerium (DTs) or seizures before, and who currently have mild withdrawal symptoms can often be managed from home.

  • Withdrawal from opioids such as pain pills, heroin, and fentanyl can often be managed from home. Options for treatment include medications to control withdrawal symptoms, or use of buprenorphine to detox more slowly over time. Buprenorphine can be used for a short (5 day) detox if needed (i.e. to enter a recovery program), or longer term (30 days) for a more gradual detox. Longer courses are associated with lower rates of relapse and tend to be more effective.

  • Withdrawal from other drugs is approached on a case by case basis. Withdrawal from benzodiazepines (drugs like valium or xanax) can be dangerous and is usually best accomplished in an inpatient setting. Schedule an appointment with our office to learn more about treatment options for you or your loved one.

Feeling Normal: Detox and Treatment of Withdrawal

Individuals can experience withdrawal when they suddenly stop or sharply reduce the amount of drugs or alcohol they use. This withdraw can range from mild to life threatening. People will often continue to use drugs and alcohol to prevent withdraw symptoms or simply to feel normal. Our treatments help patients navigate through withdrawal to recovery.

Management of Alcohol Withdrawal at Home

Who Can be Treated at Home?

Alcohol withdrawal can be serious or even deadly. People at risk for serious withdrawal symptoms should be managed in a hospital or inpatient detox facility. People who have had seizures in the past, or who have had delirium from alcohol withdrawal (Delirium Tremens or DTs) are at high risk for having severe alcohol withdrawal again. Additionally, people already experiencing moderate or severe withdrawal symptoms should be managed in an inpatient setting. Our team can help determine the right treatment plan for you. Medications for Alcohol Withdrawal

At Shoreline, we use the the most current treatment strategies to treat alcohol withdrawal. This includes medications tapered on a schedule over a 5 days course, as well as additional medication to take “as-needed” to help manage symptoms. In addition, we prescribe vitamin supplements to help the body recover from the effects of alcoholism.

Using Buprenorphine (Suboxone)

In addition to using medications to treat withdraw symptoms, Buprenorphine (Suboxone) can also be used to help manage symptoms and prevent relapse. Whether your goals are to use buprenorphine to help treat your addiction long term, or to stop all medications completely, buprenorphine can be a powerful tool to help you achieve your goals and start your recovery.
